I wanted this but the original poster is transphobic

This is called the “analog loophole” and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. They can encrypt and copy-protect all they want, but eventually the file has to be sent to a speaker and/or screen, and it has to get there in a human-readable form because that’s the whole dang point

The simplest way to exploit the analog loophole is just pointing a camera at a screen or a microphone at a speaker, but direct recording is also always possible and always will be. Anything that can be displayed can be saved and displayed again

Back in the day, people also used to share software over the radio with this technology. Because computer programs and files are really just sets of binary code, and that code can be turned into audio tones.

The resulting audio file can be played over the radio (sounding a bit like the old dial up noise, as it’s just two quickly oscillating notes) and recorded to a cassette tape, which you can then give to your computer to “decode” back into 0’s and 1’s, which gives you the program file. You can then run it as if you’d installed it from a disk.

NPR did a very cool podcast about this.

I think that 2023 is a good time for many of us, and allies in particular, to practice again the dying art of minding our own fucking business when it comes to the identities and lives of other people.

You see someone from one of your classes in a public place with a different gender presentation/expression than they typically have? Mind your own business.

You discover that one of your coworkers is in a same gender relationship, but they aren’t out at work? Not your place to share that information in the workplace.

You notice that your neighbor in a red state takes a road trip across state lines with their transgender child every 3-6 months? No you fucking didn’t.

You overhear students in your classroom using a different name and different pronouns for one student than you are used to using? If you live in a state hostile to trans rights, pretend that you don’t know anything about this and report nothing.

You suspect that an acquaintance of yours might be gay, but they deny it when asked directly? Leave them the fuck alone.

One of your friends refuses to publicly label their sexuality? Good for them, you aren’t entitled to that information anyway.

Your sibling comes out to you as questioning, but isn’t comfortable sharing that with your parents yet? Keep your fucking mouth shut.

Don’t out people; coming out is a personal choice not a moral obligation. Don’t demand personal information about other people’s sexuality or sex lives. You aren’t entitled to information about anyone’s gender identity, assigned gender at birth, or transition.

Bring back privacy, allow people to have control over the information that is shared about them publicly; it might save their job, their housing, their parental rights and their child’s safety, or even save lives.

I will never get over how weird it feels to have tragic and emotional chapters of your life where you just also still go to work, and the grocery store, and see funny videos online all while feeling such paralyzing fear and heartache

life just goes on no matter what

i need you all to be aware that a survey on Holocaust awareness in the Netherlands was recently commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and the responses are frightening.

(as a reminder: more than 75% of Dutch Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, which is the highest percentage of Jewish Victims per country in Western Europe. it’s also where Anne Frank lived and went into hiding before she was deported.)

according to the study,

23% of Dutch Millennials & Gen Z (12% overall) believe that the Holocaust is a myth or has been greatly exaggerated.

22% of Millennials and Gen Z (12% overall) believe it is acceptable to support neo-nazi views.

54% of all respondents do not know 6 million Jews were murdered. 29% believe it was 2 million or fewer (that number jumps to 37% when only looking at Millennials and Gen Z).

only 50% of all respondents support recent efforts by Dutch public figures to acknowledge and apologize for the Netherland’s failure to protect Jews during the Holocaust.

53% of all respondents and 60% of Millenials and Gen Z did not list the Netherlands as a country where the Holocaust took place.

Holocaust denial and erasure is getting worse. I would expect this from the USA maybe, but i’m surprised and very very concerned to see this coming from the Netherlands, which is very highly ranked in terms of education and research. please like and share and post about this, we need people to know.
